Bancroft has just read two new volumes by Lord Mahon (historian Philip Henry Stanhope, later Earl Stanhope), who praises the work of both Reed and his brother Henry Hope Reed. Bancroft also asks whether the original of a Benjamin Franklin letter is still in existence, and mentions information he plans to publish concerning Reed's grandfather Joseph Reed and his negotiations with the British peace commissioners during the Revolution.
